Many things can cause high ping's when in games. The further you are away from the Hosts server, the higher the ping will be - to a lesser extent your router and cables will also affect the ping.... for best results avoid wireless.
Here’s a check list which you can follow to make sure you get the best results while playing online.
Make sure all other devices that are connected to your router are off/disconnected from your modem.
Make sure all your background applications on your pc are off so they don’t randomly decide to update while your in-game.
Like I said before use wired or fibre cables to connect to your pc as it tends to give 2x the speed of your modem. Note *Fibre Cable is better but it’s pointless if your city hasn’t got the fibre implements in the ground so it’s best to talk to your provider first. Otherwise Wired is the best option for people living in remote areas*.
As a last resort if you still have pings of 500+ then you should really consider getting a new router. Any modem with speeds of 300 mbps+ will do nicely for online gaming, THERE'S NO NEED TO GET A TOP OF THE LINE MODEM a cheap $50 to $100 dollar 1 will do. Past 300 mbps+ the speed of ya modem won’t really affect your ping as it is more to do with player’s geological location/the distance from the server to the player. But if you do everything suggested your ping should be lower than 250 ping which is considered a good ping.
